Well, it’s here….. 12+ inches of snow in southwest Michigan and Northern Indiana yesterday. With that, comes some pretty extraordinary claims from deicer salesmen. I wanted to review a few things with you in regard to making your decision on liquid deicers. The best thing I can do is direct you to the Joe Althouse, OxyChem Chemical engineer, presentation on “Baloney Detection” dated 11/12/12 on my Blog and give you advice as what to look for. Please use this advice to review our products, Calcium Chloride and Calcium Chloride w/BOOST* as well.
Example: In recent information presented as “Fact or Science” an Organic based product is touted to be 43.9% better then 32% calcium chloride. Fact is that no real world Ice Melting Capacity can be measured to the tenth of a percent. The science of deicing is that ice melting performance depends on the number of particles in solution, not their chemical nature. So be ware of the ‘JUNK Science” out there, remember the old saying figures never lie, but…………….
* Any deicing chemical is dependent on four factors to be effective *
1. Surface temperature
2. Application Rate
3. Amount of Moisture for that Storm Event
4. Beginning Concentration of the Chloride Being Applied.
The first step in Baloney Detection is always asking the supplier for the facts / studies, that back up the claim(s). If it’s not provided, that undermines credibility. If it is provided, is it something that was provided by a credible source? Say, PNS or a University or credible Laboratory? If it only comes from the vendor with no supporting documentation, My advice… make the call “Baloney!!!”
Here are a few exerts from Joe’s presentation, It is dated 11/12/12 on the Blog.
There are many claims being made in the deicer market, and we need help determining their validity.
• “Truth-in-advertising” regulations are not consistently enforced.
• There are no regulations for full disclosure on product content labeling.
• We tend to believe what we are told when claims sound plausible. Who has time to investigate anyway?
• We need to be able to make the most informed ice melter purchasing decisions.
I know it can take a few minutes to review information, but if you click on the PNS link on the header of this Blog you can find what’s approved and then do the price comparisons for yourself. They have already done the research.
I hope this proves helpful, We at Great Lakes Chloride welcome any side by side comparisons done in real world situations. We believe the products speak for them self. We CAN provide the supporting documentation and references to support the performance of our products. So it does pay to take just a few minutes to review the info provided before making that decision to purchase. It all boils down to the fact that if all the facts or claims for products are equal, then price will determine which product you buy.
Thanks for taking the time to read. Have a safe winter!
